Johanna Summer & Malakoff Kowalski @ Palais Wittgenstein
Johanna Summer and Malakoff Kowalski share an extraordinary mutual appreciation: virtuosic, minimalist and full of musical magic that goes beyond mere technique. Now, for the first time, they are appearing on stage together with a joint duo programme. The occasion is two recent releases: Summer's jazz EP Upright (ACT 2025) and Kowalski's album Songs With Words (Sony Classical 2025), on which he sings poems by Allen Ginsberg – accompanied by Igor Levit, Johanna Summer and Chilly Gonzales, among others. At the same time, a seven-part jazz suite by Summer was created in the studio, combining original compositions, standards and a Wagner elegy. The concert programme combines pieces from both releases as well as solo piano works and moves between improvised jazz, European classical music and American beat poetry. Lovebird Festival
Various music genres are presented and other art forms are integrated. Jazz is at the heart of the program, but it does not dominate; instead, it serves as the foundation for a wide range of new sonic combinations: jazz and hip-hop, jazz and electronic music, as well as indie, funk, and soul. The aim is to create a festival from an expanded musical offering and additional creative spaces that functions as a harmonious Gesamtkunstwerk, encouraging participation, listening, observing, and reflection. In short: a festival for the senses. The non-music program includes: a film screening at the Cinema arthouse cinema, a karaoke talk with Musikalisches Poesiealbum, a panel discussion, and a music and bird-themed city tour.
