Marcus Schinkel Trio feat. Ernie Watts @ Maxhaus
Crossover music thrives on crossing boundaries – embodied by legendary saxophonist Ernie Watts, two-time Grammy Award winner and musical crossover artist between jazz, funk, rock and soul. His collaborations with greats such as Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones make him the ideal partner for crossover pianist Marcus Schinkel. Since their first joint appearance in 2016 at the Bonn Jazz Festival – hailed as a highlight by the press and audience alike – Watts and the Schinkel Trio have been combining jazz, classical and rock to create a unique, contemporary sound. Schinkel's lyrical piano playing meets expressive synthesizer sounds, creating a rare connection between concert grand piano and the world of electronic sound. The trio, with Wim de Vries (drums) and Fritz Roppel (bass), spans a wide musical arc from poetic lines to powerful, improvised outbursts – in keeping with the motto: tradition means passing on the fire. Lovebird Festival
Various music genres are presented and other art forms are integrated. Jazz is at the heart of the program, but it does not dominate; instead, it serves as the foundation for a wide range of new sonic combinations: jazz and hip-hop, jazz and electronic music, as well as indie, funk, and soul. The aim is to create a festival from an expanded musical offering and additional creative spaces that functions as a harmonious Gesamtkunstwerk, encouraging participation, listening, observing, and reflection. In short: a festival for the senses. The non-music program includes: a film screening at the Cinema arthouse cinema, a karaoke talk with Musikalisches Poesiealbum, a panel discussion, and a music and bird-themed city tour.
